Mayor backs abbey appeal

The Mayor of Glastonbury Councillor Jon Cousins has given Glastonbury Abbey’s fundraising appeal his backing.

The town councillor has supported the appeal since he took office, attending a number of events and helping to promote the fundraising campaign.

He said: “Glastonbury Abbey is very close to my heart. Its history and heritage as well as its myths and legends make it a cultural and spiritual centre of international significance.”

The Rescue Our Ruins Appeal: The Final Chapter aims to raise £100,000 by February to cover the cost of major conservation and enhancement of the Abbot’s Kitchen and the Lady Chapel Crypt and Galilee.

The next event at the abbey which will be boosting funds is tomorrow’s Night at the Abbey (Friday September 9), the annual spectacle of music, light and colour. It will feature on stage local groups and soloists Dragonsfly, Kevin and the Destroyers, Safehaus, September Son, Jon Maybey Trio, Mr Keep Calm, Oska Zaky, Dave Beech and Dan Shaw.

Meanwhile, a fundraising quiz is being held at Glastonbury Town Hall on October 28 with tickets costing £15 per person to include a cheese ploughman’s supper and Eton Mess dessert and a complimentary drink on arrival.

A floral workshop with Nicky Llewellyn is planned for November 16 in the small hall of Glastonbury Town Hallfrom 10am for 10.30am to 1pm.
